Room 25 is loving BOOK WEEK!

Book Week 2015 is off to a great start in Room 25! Every day we get a surprise with a book week song coming over the speaker - We know when we hear it to STOP, DROP AND READ!!!! 

Today we enjoyed Mrs Polkinghorne reading to us at lunch time in the library.  She read us "The best loved bear".  Owairaka students brought in their best loved bear and really enjoyed this time to have a cuddle and listen to a great story!

Thank you Cole!

This week, Cole brought in his BOW from Santa Fe, New Mexico.  It is special to Cole because his Dad brought it for him and he loves the detail on it.

We wrote descriptively with the goal of giving our readers a picture in their head of what the BOW looks like.  It has also helped us with our learning in topic because this BOW is from another country.  We found Santa Fe in the atlas, check it out below!

Elephant Festival in Jaipur, India

At part of our topic - "Making connections to the world" - We looked at the Elephant Festival in Jaipur, India.

We were fascinated and decided to do some descriptive writing about the pictures above.  After writing we did some art work as well!

Maths Week - Get into it!

Family Maths Week Challenge

As a family, can you solve these problems?

Problem 1

Oh no, you are trapped inside a dungeon! A guard has offered to free you if you can solve this puzzle. The guard draws a Roman numeral for 9 on the wall with some chalk and challenges you to draw one continuous line and turn this into a 6. If you can solve the puzzle you will be freed!  

Problem 2

Make the following pattern using matchsticks or any other materials. (pegs, pencils, felts etc.)

How many more are needed to make a square?
How many more need adding to make yet another square alongside it?
Carry on adding more squares ... a matchstick.

How many matches have you added?
How many matches are there when you have made 10 squares in the row?  20 squares? 50 squares?

Once you have your answers take a photo and send an email to Miss Green jgreen@owairaka.school.nz  with “Family Maths Week” as the subject.

Please make sure your name and class is clearly written in the email.

You can also draw/write your answer on a piece of paper and deliver it to Room 21.

All entries which are received by Friday will go into our Maths Week prize draw.
