We are learning about AREA and PERIMETER

We are learning that AREA is the total surface or inside of a 2D shape. PERIMETER is the total distance around the outside of a shape.

During Maths we did a fun activity:

1. We traced around our foot in our Maths books

2. We filled the inside of our foot outline with blocks or counters to figure out the AREA

3. We counted the number of blocks or counters that it took to fill our 2D shape. Then we discussed if blocks or counters were better for calculating area (we decided on blocks because there were less gaps between each block compared to counters)

4. We compared our measurements with other people in our problem solving group and figured out which foot outline had the largest surface area and which foot outline had the smallest

5. Miss O'Shea put us in partners and gave us a length of string

6. We measured the PERIMETER by placing the string around the outside of our foot shape and then measured the string against a ruler (in cm).

Learning about AREA and PERIMETER is fun!
